Dr. Atala received his M.D. degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1985. He spent the next years gaining precious specialist experience. He performed his surgical and urological residencies at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He afterwards served a two-year pediatric urology fellowship at Children's Hospital, Boston, where he joined the Department of Urology in 1992.

Dr. Atala is Assistant Professor of Surgery (Urology) at the Harvard Medical School. He holds several positions of importance in his scientific society, such as being member of the board of Directors at the Medical Advisory Board, and chairman of the Summer Research Scholar Program for the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In addition to this, he is a founding member and chairman of the Board of Directors for the National Bladder Foundation.
