Dr. Whitehead graduated from Vanderbilt University and obtained his M.D. degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. After graduation he received his surgical training at the Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force and a surgeon in Vietnam. He performed his urology residency at the New York University Medical Center in New York City. He is the founder and director of the Association for Male Sexual Dysfunction in New York City and New York Phalloplasty.

He has published over 100 articles and book chapters in the field of urology and has frequently lectured and has demonstrated surgery overseas. In 1999 he wrote a book on the effects of Viagra. He has made presentations on penile enlargement surgery all around the world. Among these the presentation of his experience at the Second Congress of the European Society for Male Genital Surgery in Milan, Italy. He holds two United States patents on unitary inflatable penile prostheses.
