Dr. Kanter Kirk R. - Cardiothoracic Surgery / Cardiochirurgia

Dr. Kanter graduated from the Albany Medical College. He served his Internship in Internal Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine, where he also served his Residency in Internal Medicine. He afterwards performed his Residency in Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served his Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Brompton Hospital, London, England and in Thoracic Transplantation and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Harefield Hospital, London, England. Dr. Kanter is Board Certified both by the American Board of Surgery and by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

He serves as chief of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department and Director of the Heart and Lung Transplant Program at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. He is also Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine His main areas of interest are the following: cardiac assist and cardiac replacement, heart, lung and heart/lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory assistance, surgical management of congenital heart disease with emphasis on early correction, etc. He has made numerous scientific presentations both in his country and abroad. He is the author of many journal articles, journal abstracts and book chapters. He participated in numerous research programs. He has been honoured with the President's Award for Best Scientific Paper at the Annual Meeting of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association in 1994.

Dr. Kanter is a member of many professional and scientific societies, including the: Alpha Omega Alpha, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, American Heart Association, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, Medical Association of Atlanta, Medical Association of Georgia and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
