Dr. Kanter graduated from the Albany Medical College. He served his Internship in Internal Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine, where he also served his Residency in Internal Medicine. He afterwards performed his Residency in Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served his Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Brompton Hospital, London, England and in Thoracic Transplantation and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Harefield Hospital, London, England. Dr. Kanter is Board Certified both by the American Board of Surgery and by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Kanter is a member of many professional and scientific societies, including the: Alpha Omega Alpha, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, American Heart Association, American Society of Transplant Surgeons, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, Medical Association of Atlanta, Medical Association of Georgia and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
