Dr. Thorne graduated from the UCLA School of Medicine. Afterwards he served his Residency in Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, from 1981 until 1986. He then underwent extensive additional training in Plastic Surgery at the New York University, from 1986 until 1988 and in Craniofacial Surgery, from 1988 until 1989. Dr. Thorne is American Board Certified both on Surgery and on Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Thorne currently serves as Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery (Plastic Surgery) with Tenure at the N.Y.U. School of Medicine. He has been Chief of the Plastic Surgery Service at the Bellevue Hospital since 1992, Program Director of the Center for Ear Anomalies, at the N.Y.U. Medical Center, since 1990,as well as Co-Director of the Center for Craniofacial Prosthetics since 1992. The Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, N.Y.U. Medical Center has honoured him with the Teacher of the Year Award (1997-98 and 1993-1994).

Dr Thorne has published numerous articles and book chapters. He has lectured extensively. Dr. Thorne is Associate Editor of The Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Trauma. He is a distinct member of many professional organizations including the -American Association of Plastic Surgeons -American Cleft Palate Association -American College of Surgeons -American Medical Association -American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery -American Society of Craniofacial Surgery -American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons -American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons -Forum for Academic Plastic Surgeons -International Society for Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons -Plastic Surgery Research Counci.
