Dr. Abrams graduated in 1982 from the University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center, where he afterwards specialized in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987. He received additional training in Paediatric Orthopaedics at the Children's Hospital of San Diego. In 1988 he joined the Harvard University, where he received training in Hand Surgery until 1989. His primary areas of interest are: upper extremity trauma, complex elbow and wrist problems, and rheumatoid and other arthritic problems of the upper extremity.

He is a member of many professional organizations, including the following: The Academic Orthopaedic society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Society, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Association of Hand Surgery, the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the Kiros Society California Medical Association, the Western Orthopaedic Association and the Association of Hand Surgery Fellowship Directors.
