Dr. Akelman is an Orthopaedic Surgeon, Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery by which he has been also given the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. His is an expert in Hand, Wrist, Elbow and Microvascular Surgery. He is an active staff member at the Rhode Island Hospital and the Miriam Hospital. In addition to this, he is a consulting staff physician at the VA Medical Center, Women and Infants' Hospital and Roger Williams Hospital.

Dr. Akelman performs a variety of hand surgical procedures having as a goal to provide his patients with the best possible care. It's worth saying that the main areas of his surgical interest include microsurgery with the aim to reattach severed fingers, reconstructive surgery in order to improve the function of children who are born with deformed hands and reconstructive surgery for the hand and wrist of patients who suffer from arthritis so as to improve hand dexterity and strength.
