Dr. Urschel received his M.D. degree from the University of Alberta, in 1982. He performed his General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery Residencies at the University of Alberta and University of Manitoba from 1982 until 1991. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. In addition, he obtained the Canadian Certificate of Special Competence in Thoracic Surgery in 1991. His main areas of surgical interest are: esophageal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, thoracic surgical oncology, laboratory investigation of esophagogastric anastomotic wound healing and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
