Dr. Urschel John D. - Cardiothoracic Surgery / Cardiochirurgia

Dr. Urschel received his M.D. degree from the University of Alberta, in 1982. He performed his General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery Residencies at the University of Alberta and University of Manitoba from 1982 until 1991. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. In addition, he obtained the Canadian Certificate of Special Competence in Thoracic Surgery in 1991. His main areas of surgical interest are: esophageal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, thoracic surgical oncology, laboratory investigation of esophagogastric anastomotic wound healing and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

Dr. Urschel served as Assistant Professor at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and SUNY at Buffalo from 1993 to 1997. He was Chief of Thoracic Surgical Oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute from 1997 to 1999. He has been Associate Professor and Chief of Surgery at the St. Joseph's Hospital from 1999. In addition, he has been Surgical Oncologist at the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre, from 1999.

Dr. Urschel is a member of numerous professional and scientific societies, including the: Academy of Surgical Research, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP), American College of Surgeons (FACS), Association for Academic Surgery, Association for Surgical Education, Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons, Canadian Association of University Surgeons, Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Society of Surgical Oncology, Dysphagia Research Society, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd).
