Dr. Nichols was born and raised in California. He graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1974. He then completed a one year internship at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago from 1974 until 1975 where he afterwards performed a four year orthopaedic specialty training (1975-1979). After this training, Dr. Nichols completed the examinations required to become Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery. Each year Dr. Nichols attends many continuing medical education courses to maintain current orthopaedic knowledge and skills.

Dr. Nichols is an American Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon (1980). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, since 1983 and of the American College of Surgeons, since 1984. He is a member of numerous scientific societies, including the: American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, since 1996; California Orthopaedic Association, since 1991; California Medical Association, since 1979. Dr. Nichols is married and has four children. He and his family have lived in Redding since 1979.
