Dr. Sumpio graduated from the Cornell University Medical School, New York, NY in 1980. He afterwards performed his General Surgery Residency at the Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, from 1981 to 1986. He then served a Vascular Fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, from 1986 to 1987. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, with Special Qualifications in Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Sumpio has served as Chief of the Section of Vascular Surgery at the Yale University School of Medicine, from 1995 to present. He has been Professor of Surgery at the Yale University School of Medicine, from 1994. He has held the position of Program Director of Vascular Surgery at the Yale University School of Medicine, from1995 to present.

Dr. Sumpio is a member of numerous scientific societies, including the following: American Surgical Association, New England Surgical Society, Society for Vascular Surgery, Society for Vascular Medicine and Biology, International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Surgeons. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of American College of Surgeons, the Cell Transplantation, the Journal Surgical Research and the American Journal of Physiology. He is listed among the best in the 2000 edition of How to Find the Best Doctors: New York Metro Area.
