Dr. Philip R. Schauer

Dr. Schauer graduated from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1986. He completed his residency in surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1993. He afterwards performed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He was also an attending surgeon with the gastrointestinal surgical service at the University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

He joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in 1995, where he serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery, Director of Endoscopic Surgery, and co-director of the Mark Ravitch/Leon C. Hirsch Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Dr. Schauer’s main areas of interests are laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, laparoscopic esophageal surgery, laparoscopic colon resection, laparoscopic adrenalectomy and splenectomy, and laparoscopic surgery for severe obesity. He has a large research activity and has authored numerous papers, abstracts, and book chapters on gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery.

He is a member of many professional societies, including the following: American College of Surgeons, Association of Academic Surgery, Society of Laproendoscopic Surgeons, Society for Minimally Invasive Therapy, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He has been honoured in 1997 with the SAGES 1997 Young Researchers Award in Endoscopic Surgery.
