Dr. Appley graduated from the Tulane University Medical School. He performed both his internship and residency at the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center. He is an American Board Certified Neurological Surgeon. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has taught Neurological Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia as Assistant Professor.

Dr. Appley specializes in: Gamma Knife Radiosurgery; Neurosurgical Oncology; Pituitary and Stereotactic Surgery; Spinal Surgery.
Since coming to Orlando, he has been instrumental in developing a computer-assisted, minimally invasive surgery program. This includes bringing the Gamma Knife to Orlando, making "bloodless brain surgery" a reality for patients in and around Central Florida. Dr. Appley served as Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Medical Director of the Neuroscience Critical Care Unit at the Florida Hospital. He is currently the Medical Director of Neurosurgery for the Gamma Knife Center. Dr. Appley also serves as the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Winter Park Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Appley has served in many prestigious professional organizations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society, Orlando Metro Unit. He is a member of numerous scientific societies including the: American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Leksell Gamma Knife Society, International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society, Joint Sections on Tumors, Stereotactic Surgery and Pain, and the American and World Societies for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.
