Dr. Clifton received his B.S. degree from the Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, in 1971. He also received his M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, in 1975. After graduating he spent the next years gaining precious specialist experience. He served his Internship in Surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, from 1975 to 1976. He afterwards received an extensive additional training in Neurogical Surgery, performing his Residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, from 1976 to 1980.

It's worth saying that Dr. Clifton holds presently several positions of importance in his scientific and professional society. He currently serves as Professor and Chairman at the Vivian L. Smith Center for Neurologic Research as well as Nancy, Clive, and Pierce Runnells Chair in Neurosurgery. His high level of surgical skills is well recognized throughout his country.
